Fair enough, once bitten and all that, but we've all got war stories
from this-or-that distro and mileage is /always/ variable to some degree
in that regard, isn't it? For instance, many people agree that the
Ubuntu installer is pretty straightforward, but I guarantee a trawl of
the forums will reveal at least the odd instance where an install has
gone badly and an unhappy customer. The difference is many probably
won't have had the foresight to back up as you did.
