Thanks for all your replies geezers. Forgot to follow up to this.

Yep - the problem seems to be worse with "Appearance" settings on
"Extra", less worse when set on "Normal" and no problems so far with
"None".

A shame as I find the "Normal" setting a nice trade-off between bling
and usability. I'm running with the nVidia proprietary driver
("nvidia") and will try the GPL Nvidia driver ("nv"). I will report
back here about it later.

So it looks like it wasn't the HDD cable as I suspected. In this Asus
Pundit though the SATA HDD connector is rather short and I found it
easy to dislodge. I've discovered recently that a loose HDD cable
causes more serious and apparant problems!
