When I bought my new TV, one of the features I was looking for
was something capable of 24fps. This is the standard frame rate
for blu-ray discs, and if your TV is only capable of 25fps (or
multiples thereof), then you can get choppiness.

Could it be related to that? If the DVD is 25fps, and your computer
is outputting 60 or 80fps, then there won't be a perfect sync between
the two. Whether this is the cause of the problem or not, I don't
know, but it might be worth asking on somewhere like avforums[1].

There could also be all sorts of other things going on as well,
depending on the type of DVD player. Our main DVD player (costing
several hundred pounds) gives a much cleaner picture even when
scaling up to a 50" screen, than my £10 DVD player in my PC does
when displaying at native resolution. This isn't something I'm
too surprised about (actually, I'd be most upset if this wasn't
the case). Some of the cheapness of the PC player is offset by
doing in software what the dedicated player does in hardware of
course, but it's another factor.
