This is possibly "Domain guessing". If Firefox gets a "not found" error
back from a DNS server, it will trya dding the configured prefix and/or
suffix to see whether that works. The defaults are www. and .com, and
it is enabled. To turn it off, go to about:config, and double-click
browser.fixup.alternate.enabled to set it to false.

Then again, DNS servers can try various tricks to resolve names, so it
may actually be that which is happening.
