It is not a codec problem. It is a DVD problem. DVDs expect the file
to be in a special format and layout, and it is that that is the real
problem.
Try mencoder from the people who do mplayer.

You need to convert the divx to a special mpeg format suitable for DVDs.
A very easy way to do this would be to first convert the divx to dv format.
Watch out, dv format uses a lot of disc space.
Then use kino to edit the media file, and then use kino to write it to DVD.
