I had a similar problem with a 2400 hat had ran non-stop for almost
three years!
In my case it was the heaksink was clogged. Replacing it (and the fan)
gave me a new machine!

Also I have been told that the thermal cement may dryup/debond causing
symptoms similar to what you have seen.
Consider removing/re-installing/replacing the heatsink and fan.
