I don't think that you're being too pessimistic - the software is
improving and there are lots of different distributions for it now.
On balance I think it's less suitable as a phone than my ancient Nokia:
battery life issues and fiddly surfing the web via GPRS but phone calls
work and text messages work though it can be fiddly to type them.
