kalarm can be set to annoy you on all desktops (right click the title
bar and choose 'To Desktop/All Desktops') it can also do any or all
of: play any arbitrary sound file, email you, execute a command. sudo
chvt 1 should get your attention!

Personally I set a timer on my watch!
