If the router has done an auto scan it maybe that it didn't see an interfering network which was over the other side of the house and out of range of it but is within range of the laptop's location.
The Netgear product I mentioned is a homeplug product so we're all suggesting the same alternative. The thing I like about the Netgear is that each unit has 4 ports rather than the single port I've seen on other units. There are 2 flavours of homeplug the 85 meg version and the HD version which is 200 meg. Some other units do the same thing but are not homeplug compatible so can't be mixed.
