I have bought several no-name USB to serial adaptors and they all
worked under Linux out of the box. The two I have immediately to
hand both use the "prolific" driver. I got one of them from Maplin,
but it has no identifying marks on it. I don't know where the other
is from.

I would think a random purchase is very likely to be successful.
