Also at the risk of sounding obvious. Are you unplugging the headphones when you try the speakers? I ask because I came across a laptop recently that couldn't do both.

Have you turned everything in kmix fully up? I ask because my Dell has two audio gain controls on the internal audio. They are both in series and you hear nothing unless they're both near the top.

Which sound system are you using? If it's pulseaudio have you opened the volume control to check which device the default is and where the audio is going?

Does the output plugin of whichever player you're using have any settings?
