As a GNOME user (of Ubuntu) I decided at the start of December to
switch to KDE full time at least until the next release of Ubuntu - so
that's about 6 months. I've switched my main laptop, and since that's
been running KDE 4.1 just fine, I've now (just today) switched my
desktop. I have removed pretty much all of GNOME from both machines so
there's no easy temptation to go back. I'll of course be learning a
lot from this as I have never really given KDE much of a run, and it
should enable me to better support other users when they need it.
You could do something similar, like take something you have disliked
in the past, and really get up to your knees (so to speak) in it to
learn from the experience.
