It's not the PC brigade that's doing it.
Whether the rush to surveillance is part of some evil Government plot, or
simply a bunch of people with no idea how to solve an essentially
unsolvable problem (but lacking the courage to say so) is unclear. What it
will do is to convince the readership of the Daily Mail that Something Is
Being Done.
The fact that what is being done is somewhere between useless and
significantly counterproductive seems to have eluded them. But this isn't
the first time, nor will it be the last...
