Subject: [Hampshire] Using external kvm with laptop
Hi all

I have an irritating little problem having upgraded (or rather having had upgraded) my work laptop. It's now very difficult to get working with my monitor.

What I want is to connect it either directly or via its docking station to my 32" monitor and preferred mouse and keyboard. On my old Dell laptop this was a doddle - PS2 to USB adaptor for kbd and mouse and VGA and network straight into the back. From the moment I pressed power on the laptop, I could do and more importantly see everything "remotely".

The new laptop (which fwiw has safeboot but I don't think that's the problem) doesn't work in the same way. Essentially, I have to go through safeboot and our Window$ network login on the laptop screen, kbd and mouse before I get anything out of the other monitor. The monitor simply sits in standby mode. Now here's the wrinkle... If I connect it to another 14" monitor - it behaves perfectly - I can see everything from the initial HP logo through safeboot, network login and into the desktop.

Our IT guys have (oh so helpfully) told me it can't be done until I faff about with the display settings in Window$ - but I've proved them wrong - I just need to get it working with the 32" monitor exactly as it is with the 14"

It's almost as though my 32" monitor requires a "wake up signal" from the laptop which the 14" doesn't - and this "wake up" signal is not forthcoming from the laptop.

This is the best way I can explain it at the moment (sorry it's not a techie description) so if anyone can get me a workaround, I'd be very grateful.

TIA

Cheers
Rob
