I should have mentioned a couple more genealogy applications.

TNG (The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding) is very
comprehensive in what it can do. It uses mysql + php to store and
display data, this does mean the user will probably need to set up a
hosted website which provides those two apps.

an example database I often have access to as the site owner covers
quite a bit of the same background as my 'Kingsclere Families' database
and we pass data between us.

The other application is PHPGedView. This also requires a website with
apache, php etc etc. available.

an example database is here

I, personally, don't find this as easy to view as TNG but the site
owner loves it and since I have Lovelock ancestors I have to use it
from time to time.

Geneweb does have the advantage over the other two in being a
web server in its own right and can run on a standalone system just as
easily as on a hosted server. It doesn't have all the bells and
whistles of the other two but it serves me well enough.

All three are very scalable so you can have databases ranging from a few
hundred names to many thousands, even into the millions. This geneweb
database has nearly 3 million names:-
