The first thing to check is whether or not this is simply a screen fault -
if the backlight has failed (usually an inverter failure), the screen
*will* be displaying full colour, you just can't see it.

Use a torch at an angle, or plug in an extrnal monitor to diagnose that.
the torch trick is fiddly - try a number of angles in places you expect to
see something you'd recognise.

If nothing happens from those tests, find the memory & make sure it's
seated properly. The Pavillions usually put main memory under the keyboard
- it's a pain to get to. There's also usually another DIMM slot under a
panel on the underside
