It was that sort of thing that put me off gramps, it was easy enough to
import a tree from a gedcom but it wasn't exactly obvious to get
started from scratch

I have to admit I don't know if win apps like Family Tree Maker are any
easier to get started with as it is many years since we started doing
genealogy with FTM.

With geneweb it is very easy, the start screen has an menu item
'add a family' and clicking on this opens a form where, for example, you
input father's name and birth date/place, ditto for mother and then
date/place of marriage. Also on that form you can add children of the
family.

Once the 'originating' family is in place you go back to the start
screen and select the surname you just input and you will then see the
family and can add the grandparents (and siblings) by selecting
'update > add parents'

All names are hypertext links to that individual's 'page' so it is very
easy to navigate around a tree. One thing I particularly like is that
all 'branches' of any particular surname can be seen on screen at once
and this is a big help when trying to connect together a
collection of twiglets.
