I'd also recommend Vuescan. http://www.hamrick.com/vsm.html

It works on Win/Lin/Mac and is for SCSI & USB scanners and works on a
low level, so the scanner drivers do not need to be loaded (especially
good with an old SCSI scanner where the drivers are outdated).
I've got the Pro version which includes lifetime updates and allows me
to run the Pro version on all the OSs I use.
