F-Spot is already installed by default, thus parts of Mono have been
installed by default for ages. Mono is not a single application but a
whole raft of packages, with varying levels of legal safety. As I
understand it the bits that are on the CD are the bits towards the safer
end of the spectrum. The threat from Microsoft against those bits would
appear to be negligible - Microsoft really really want all code to use
.Net or Mono so they would be unlikely to do anything against it (unless
there might be money to be had when they will of course undermine the
project at the drop of a hat - Silverlight on Moblin for example).
Whether it is wise or not to do what Microsoft want you to do is a
different question altogether.
