A quick update for those interested and many thanks for the informative
replies .

A test with one through housing connector, 1 metre of submarine cable
soldered to 15 metres of cat5 worked fine. 30 metres of Cat 5 didn't
which I bears out the advice that was given. I learned that ping returns
error codes that reflect the connection state.
