More generic advice would be "read the release notes". Upgrading an
operating system in place - a so-called "rolling upgrade" - is an
immensely complex undertaking to automate. Debian have done unbelievably
good work over the past few years in facilitating rolling upgrades (as
opposed to some other popular distros where the official advice is "backup,
wipe, reinstall, restore"). Ubuntu have built on that to automate the
process a lot, but there are always cases where some TLC is needed.
Reading the release notes can save a lot of work later (yes, I realise
that reading the documentation is usually the last resort, but for
operating systems it makes good sense).
