[Hampshire] Key board mapping.

Hello Folks.

I have just upgraded to Lenny. I believe I am using a US keyboard at
least it has a $ sign above the four and no gbp sign anywhere. :) When
I boot to command line the pipe symbol (shift \) on my key board appears
as a tilde. The tilde symbol doesn't work at all, in fact causes the
machine to beep and none of the other keys are mapped to |. Does
anybody know a hack/setting that sets the keyboard mapping during the
boot process before the xserver boots please.
