I ended up with an HP Photosmart C4580 wireless printer/copier/scanner
that cost a lot less than the last dedicated scanner I bought and
provides a lot more functionality.
It plays nice with Ubuntu plus xsane, and the wireless function means
that everyone can use it from anywhere in the house. We have even had a
bit of use out of the copier recently.
