I agree mostly with Vic's reply, but I do think that there is a difference
in depth of technical understanding between Windows and Linux people (a
generalisation, of course). Recently, when trying to help a Windows person
who could not get an Exchange server to send mail out to the big world:

Me: What happens if you "telnet external-mail-server-IP 25"?
Them: This is Exchange. Exchange doesn't use Telnet.
