If the leap to oauth2, as others have mentioned, is a step too far it might be worth setting them up with a simple domain name and email hosting package (I can recommend Mythic Beasts for this) which will then allow you to stay with SMTP via LOGIN. They/you also gain the benefit of having real tech support if they ever have problems with their email service.
