Subject: [Hampshire] Mail routing with secondary MX
OK, I cut and pasted from an email in my HantsLUG folder, but it seems I
must have gone to my old one and not my new one - doh! (..by way of
translation, having just scanned that bit back, I sent to hants@ instead
of hampshire@).

Anyhoo...

I'm playing a bit with my mail routing at the moment and wondered if
anyone had any suggestions. My current setup for a couple of spare
domains I have is this:

Primary MX - my local server on ADSL
Secondary MX - my external server

The local server on the ADSL is configured so that it doesn't talk to
any external servers other than my own one (which is the secondary MX),
so all mail comes to the secondary MX first and is forwarded on to the
primary. Not quite the intent of a secondary MX server, but it works :)

The only problem is that the primary server doesn't have any idea what
mail accounts are valid, so any mail for an account that doesn't exist
gets rejected by the primary and ends up frozen in the mail queue on the
secondary - which I have to clear out every now and then.

Clearly this will be a problem with a higher volume mail server and I'll
have to automate the process of clearing the frozen messages - probably
by logging them one night and deleting the next I suspect.

Does anyone have a better suggestion as to a solution? This looks to be
a standard problem on a secondary MX server, but since this is being
used all the time it is more of an issue.

Right, off swimming and then back to read up more on the subject :)
