It's a more modern way of referencing drives. In these days of 6 SATA
ports per motherboard and ever the increasing popularity of RAID arrays
in home machines, referencing disks by the connector to which they are
connected is a silly way to assign device nodes.

So modern distros use a unique ID like that above to reference a drive.
That way no matter which physical cable it's plugged into, your root
drive will always be that.
