I also recommend the wiki approach.
We have an internal wiki which many of us use to record the steps
required for nasty software building or the like. Personally I use it
when ever I am doing something which I don't know how to do off the top
of my head. It has the added bonus that with minor editing docs can
then be dumped online.

We use DokuWiki.
