That's was my experience as well 4 years ago, they'd overheat badly.
However I think there's been a technology shift since then. 2.5" drive
power consumption seems to have plummeted from 8W to <3W. You can get
a five year warrantees for 24/7 operation these days, unheard of four
years ago.
