IMHO that some sort of solution to use a truly randomly generated MAC
address including part of a time sync when the VM was started after a
copy (Some versions of VMWare actually recognize that you have copied
the VM Image) and lets you (default) to a new MAC address or if
configured asks if you want to change it.

There was a nice solution to a similar problem I cam upon many eons
(well years anyway).

Ok, lets wind up the grey cells.

Back in the days of DECnet, each system actually presented TWO MAC
addresses onto the LAN.
The first (naturally) was the Hardware MAC. The second was another MAC
in a totally different range
(08-00-2b-xx-xx-xx (or similar for DEC built NIC's) for the Hardware) in
the range AA-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx.
The actual number present was generated out of the DECnet address of the
system.
