On behalf of your Committee for the Hampshire Branch, we would like to
introduce the first event of our programme:

Weekend of OpenStreetMapping 10,11,12 October
Speaker and organiser: Nick Whitelegg, Southampton Solent University

OpenStreetMap is a wiki map of everywhere and editable by anyone, with
the aim of producing freely-available mapping data without copyright
restrictions. The project was started to enable people to use maps in
creative, productive or unexpected ways. Traditional maps are hampered
by legal and technical restrictions that restrict their use; the aim of
the OSM project is to create free geographic data, such as street maps,
that can be used by anyone, anywhere.

Users submit GPS satellite navigation trace data and use Landsat and
Yahoo! satellite imagery to create maps collaboratively. OpenStreetMap
has been running for over two years and its diverse community of 5500
users is mainly based in Europe where maps are generally owned by
national governments.

There will be a presentation on Friday evening of 10 October, and a day
of practical hands-on mapping ? equipment can be borrowed ? on Saturday
11 October in the Winchester area, with a rap up planned for the Sunday
morning. Venue and joining details to be confirmed. You do not need to
attend for all of the time ? just make arrangements with Nick

This event is open to all (both BCS and non BCS members), free of
