Can I recommend a cheap virtual server for a backup MX that you
control? ;)

Although to be fair the need to do the same antispam drudgery you do
on the primary (if not more) tends to mean you need a reasonable
amount of RAM.

No, it'd say you were set nomail if it had unsubbed you, so you
should be OK.
