You can draw graphs in gnuplot with text connected with lines. A bit
crude but have a look at:
http://gnuplot.sourceforge.net/demo_4.2/datastrings.html

The only other thing that came to my mind was the pstricks package
for LaTeX.

Hugo's suggestion may be better. I am just about to take his crash
course for myself :-)
