Eventually I abandoned it too. I share your preference, but wanted to
try to follow the Howto as it was wrote....

Presumably it's what lets people use
"myActualName+aContext@???" when giving their address. I'll
have to give it a go sometime...

In fact I was getting it on attempts to send incoming mail to the
server, not outgoing from it. Turned out to be down to a typo in my
main.cf config file!
