For a machine not carrying out any server like tasks, I think a
suspend to RAM screen saver is about the most useful. It will save the
most power. If the machine is carrying out server like tasks, then a
simple power down of the screen is probably all it can do.
For a machine that periodically collects stats. I good option could be
to get it to grab the stats, suspend and automatically wake up X
minutes later to grab the stats again, and the repeat.
