Thanks for all the responses - I may look for a second hand duplex - reduces
paper usage and makes manuals more manageable. (Any comments re duplex would
be appreciated.)

I've had a Brother HL5270n for something over a year now - bought it
through Amazon. It does Postscript emulation (which was a fundamental
requirement for me), and duplex, and it has an Ethernet interface, so no
need to worry about relying on Samba for printing on the home network.
I'm still on the original toner cartridge, though the printer complains
every so often that toner is low.
