we are quite prepared to rip apart the home page and start again,
possibly in Flash but I wouldn't know where to start with that. It needs
to be a glossy marketing type feel to it, not the functional beauty of
something like slashdot. With this re-think of the approach the home
page kind of needs to lead to all the sub pages, without looking like a
big index. Maybe a coverflow like thing of thumbnails of the sub-pages
or something like that.

yes, I hate sites that handle screen sizes dis-gracefully, fluid width
is the only way.
