There are a couple of reasons, but the most compelling is that ISPs
invariably skimp on their DNS provision. As a result, DNS queries are dog
slow - so that means your browsing is slow as well. And if your ISP's DNS
servers fall over[1], you've got no hope...
Setting up your own DNS server is *easy*. Really, really easy. And the
performance improvement it generates is well worth it, even if you never
want to do anything more complex.

[1] I used to be a Force9 customer. Their DNS servers were so flakey, I
investigated setting up my own - that's how I found out how easy it was. >From that point on, I could tell when their servers failed again - everyone else on the pipe was sat waiting for DNS results that would never
come, so I had all the bandwidth to myself :-)
