Hi,

I saw a similar issue with Gentoo on my laptop because the supplied kernel didn't have the correct drivers needed to access the DVD drive. The solution there was to roll your own kernel with the correct driver on another machine then rebuild the install media. I just couldn't be bothered.

Have you checked the Ubuntu or Debian downloads? I think at least one of those may have a SPARC variant.
