ext4 support isn't in intrepid (8.10) - so I'm not entirely surprised.

ext4 was finalised about a week before 8.10 shipped, not really
leaving time to get it in.

9.04 from Alpha 3 onwards supports installation onto ext4, but it's
not the default.

Can you mount it on 8.10 if you specify the type as "ext4dev" not
"ext4" and switch (and tune2fs -E tunefs /dev/xxxn)?
