The company I work for uses Cisco VPN routers/concentrators. There are
some compatible alternatives as well such as Netscreen.

I am one of the lucky ones as I also have a Cisco box at my home to
connect to work. All it really means though is that I don't have to run
a software VPN client on my machine, which is not much of a problem
really.

At one point I had one of the cheaper Netscreen boxes. Worked fine with
Windows but had some issues with Linux machines. Probably just a config
issue but our IT just swapped it for a Cisco 800 series box.

When I am on the road I use vpnc under Linux. There is also an official
Cisco client but I never tried it. My Windows colleagues use it though.

I have no idea what this all costs but it does seem to be pretty
reliable, and reliability is important when you have 100's of people
working remote. Maybe too expensive for a smaller company though.
