This may be pointing out the obvious, but how did you compile the kernal? Have
you used an appropriate settings file? On Debian (squeeze) there is a
/boot/config-2.6.30 (also other versions), which contains the Debian options
for the kernel build. You need to use this file when configuring the new kenel,
or it will only have support for the default options. Lack of this
configuration at build may well cause boot problems.
