I haven't followed the trail of the Slug, but this post prompted me to look
into USB caddies, as I had 120Gb lying around in an old, dead XP box.
The Dynamode product seemed to be highly regarded by most, so I ordered one
which duly arrived about 15 minutes ago. I assembled it and plugged it in to
my Ubuntu notebook and..... it was detected immediately and works perfectly!

So, I did what I should have done in the first place, and coughed up for
