I don't know if this is your problem but I fell foul of this problem when I
set up a new box.

If I mounted the share on my Linux box via fstab (my share is mounted on an
ext USB HD), then the windows users could only read the share, this was
because the system was mounting the share as root. But if I manually mounted
the share once the linux box was up and running as me a user, then the
windows users had full access to the share. I guess there is a way round it
but thats currently on my To-Do list

Its also worth noting that stopping and restarting Samba is recommended after
you have made changes to smb.conf, otherwise the changes won't take affect
until you next reboot.
