There's a place in the Bevois Valley in Southampton whose name I've
temporarily forgotten. It's a few doors down the hill from the Hobbit,
though. They repaired my video recorder a while ago, and gave good
specific advice on the relative merits of repair vs replacement for
that particular piece of equipment. I'd suggest you could do a lot
worse than ask them.
