The way I now do it for my home server is buy pairs of drives from two
different manufacturers and try and keep them as cool as possible. I'm
currently using Western Digital and Seagate but I don't really mind as
long as it isn't Maxtor.

I use RAID1 and then backup to a 3rd HD which is in an external
enclosure.
