Believe me that three years in the High Court not only taught me the procedure
rules, I learnt how to use them. Everyone in the courtroom knew the relevant
parts of the Civil Procedure rules and followed the Civil Procedure Rules.
We (the LIPs) knew quite lot more than the judges about what was the
procedure for an LIP, nd asked us!

But on that occasion ( or rather, More accurately, those occasions) it was
certainly a matter of rank.

That is a legal habit based on when clerks and solicitors were paid by the
word.
