Subject: Re: [Hampshire] All in one wifi printer/scanners

Can anyone confirm if they are using something similar?
Or does anyone have any other recommendations? Printing volume
is pretty low and mainly just text so I wouldn't be averse to
spending a bit more on a laser as that avoids the problem of
ink cartridges drying out...

I have a HP 4500 all-in-one I got a couple of months ago for £45 in
Tesco. HPLIP is quite impressive and takes care of everything. Setup
involved connecting a USB cable so the setup utility can find it and
programme it with WiFi settings. After that though everything just works
over WiFi. I encountered no problems with colour printing and it runs a
Sane server, so XSane takes care of scanning (even the document feeder
once you master the quirky GUI).

The printer itself is built very cheaply and the paper handling leaves a
lot to be desired. Both the paper pickup and the document feeder are
very capable of jamming and retrieving the crumpled paper is not made at
all easy. It takes up a lot of shelf space, as the printed paper emerges
from the front at surface level onto a flimsy tray. Prints come out face
up, so you have to reverse the page order when printing. I haven't tried
the fax machine function so I can't comment on that part, but the
photocopier function works flawlessly.

If you can find one on special offer it's quite reasonable for low
volume use. If I had paid full price I would have been a bit
disappointed I think.
