Because boxes like my NTL cable box have to be provided with a whole
heap of crap to get a connection working?

I assume that some of the options are related to connecting to USB
devices - even if current hardware does not support them?

I know a few of the modemless boxes I looked at had a USB port
for connection to a limited number of USB DSL modems.
