I get that sort of problem with my D-Link ADSL modem/router and I'd
not get an external connection on any system linked to it until I
edited /etc/resolv.conf .

I solved the problem by installing the resolvconf package once I had
a working system. This package rewrites the DNS servers to whatever
you want so they appear in /etc/resolv.conf before the DNS address
(ie 192.168.1.1) the ADSL modem supplies. Telling the modem to give
my ISP's DNS server addresses seems to have no effect.
